I’m Loco and Handrolled My Own Firewall And It’s Never Been Better

Well…

First things first, I’ve never really had issues with pfsense and never tried opnsense that being said I have always been suspicious of both.

I had no reason to be, I just was. I wanted to know how my firewall worked. I wanted to be closer to the “metal”. I wanted to hand-roll my config and know what everything does. This is akin to doing a Linux-From-Scratch build of Linux on your main pc. You learn very deeply how things work.

I’m sure they’re great! with equally great teams behind them of passionate folks who want to make secure firewalls and routers available to everyone.

So … if it wasn’t broke, why fix it?

I Dunno I Just Wanted To

Anyways, not the point of the post. The point of this is to help folks who run across a COATES-6412-NA.2 small industrial PC, it might also be branded an ElementHL-FE box. They usually require an external power brick (get a decent quality 12v 5a brick), have lower power cpus, and this particular one is fanless.

In any case they’re usually used for kiosks, digital signs, etc.

The thing that makes them popular with the home-lab, enthusiast community is that while the consumer version of this device often has realtek ethernet nics (which are horrible in FreeBSD and OpenBSD, but fine in Linux) this one has intel 210 ethernet nics which are as solid as they come.

So I Did Just That

I read the FreeBSD handbook and with DeepSeek v4 Flash (4.1) as a guide I handrolled dnsmasq (dns caching and dhcp), my pf.conf (firewalling), setup routing, configured FreeBSD etc and it’s been a gem. Everything runs smoothly. It’s really overkill for what we do but that means I have a lot of headroom.
